Huge foreign cigarettes seized
Customs intelligence arrested a Kuwait returned passenger along with 255 cartons of illegal foreign cigarettes of different brands worth about Taka 15.50 lakh from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital early yesterday.
“We arrested one Mohammad Belal of Fatikchhari, Chattagon from green channel area in the airport with a huge quantity of cigarettes kept inside in three luggage soon after his arrival around 2.20am today," director general (DG) Dr Mainul Khan of customs intelligence told BSS. The arrestee returned to Dhaka airport from Dubai via Kuwait by a flight (KU 283) of Kuwait Airways, he said, adding that the estimated value of the seized cigarette was Taka 15.50lakh. A case was lodged to this end.
Lightning kills schoolboy
A schoolboy was killed by a lightning strike at Burdeo village in Sylhet on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Towhidur Rahman, 11, son of Abdul Jalil of the village and a Class-VI student of Companyganj High School. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdul Lais said Towhidur died on the spot as a thunderbolt struck him when he went to a field near his house around 2:30pm to call the cattle home.
3 arrested with fake notes
Members of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested three people and recovered forged currency worth Tk 20 lakh at Motijheel in the capital on Thursday.
Sources at the DB said tipped off, a special team of DB (East) carried out a drive under the foot over bridge near Notre Dame College and arrested M Sadequr Rahman alias Sadek, 38, M Jahirul Hoque alias Khokan, 45 , and Jakir Hawlader, 35, around 3:25 pm. The detectives recovered fake notes worth Tk 16 lakh from Sadequr and Tk 2 lakh each from Jahirul and Jakir, a DB officer said preferring anonymity. A case was filed with Motijheel Police Station.
Views exchange meeting Apr 26
Supreme Court (SC) Legal Aid Committee will hold views exchange meeting with rights groups on April 26.
“The main aim of the meeting is to gather ideas for formulating future strategies of the committee. We will share our experience with the chief executives and senior officials of the rights bodies of the country," Advocate Titas Hellol Rema, member secretary of legal aid committee. Advocate Rema said the committee chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim and other officials will take part in the meeting.
