Heavy rain submerged many streets of the city yesterday, leaving the normal life in disarray.
The low-lying areas of the city went under knee-deep water due to the torrential rain that started early morning and continued till filling the report, causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers. People were seen crossing the roads by rickshaw or wading through the knee-deep water in the city.
Barisal met office recorded 116.8mm rainfall in city area in 24 hours. Barisal City Corporation, however, faced the problems to release the rain water from the city with in a short time.
“The drainage system in the city cleaned often to face the situation using over 200 daily labours and trying to improve the condition during heavy rain”, said Dipak Lal Mridha, conservency officer of Barisal City Corporation (BCC).
The sky has been remained cloudy since Thursday. That’s why most of the residents confined themselves inside the room. Very few transports plied city roads during the rain.
Makeshift shops, hawker markets remained closed in most of the parts of the day and kitchen markets facing hurdles as customers did not coming out from homes except emergency.
BCC workers opened all the 12 gates of the sewerage water and able to remove rain water from maximum points. But city is not totally free from the rain water till filling the report.
Small water transports operation resumed after two hours of its suspension. Nazmul Huda, deputy director (marine safety and traffic management) of BIWTA, said small water transports operation from Barisal and other river ports of the region was suspended in the morning due to gusty weather. But now it was resumed at 11AM. Operation of medium and multi-deck water transports and ferry services was continued.
