Heavy rains may trigger landslides in Sylhet, Ctg hills

Amid forecasts of heavy rain triggering landslides in Sylhet and Chittagong divisions, the north-eastern hill-clad Srimangal recorded 204mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, ending at 6pm yesterday (Friday). Rain and strong winds battered the port city of Chittagong, which recorded 86mm of rainfall and a nor'wester with gusts reaching up to 56km per hour. Three hours of heavy rain flooded the streets and houses between 6am and 9am. The Waterlogged streets made life difficult for people. In north-eastern Netrokona, the rain till 6pm
totalled 73mm, raising hopes that it would wash away the toxicity from "haors" to prevent further loss of fish and ducks. Similarly, 50mm of rainfall in Sylhet and its surrounding areas also brought hope to people watching in silent agony the death of fish in "haors", after the loss of paddy crops, in Sunamganj. A highly overcast sky after a little drizzle in Dhaka, with bolts of lightning illuminating the sky and exposing the dark clouds, suggested that more rain was in store. The city had a cool day with the maximum temperature reaching only 28.3 degrees Celsius.
