Islami Andolan Bangladesh yesterday demanded that the ‘controversial’ sculpture in front of the Supreme Court premises be removed before the holy months of Ramadan. Otherwise, the islamist party threatened to stage countrywide protest on 17th of Ramadan for its removal.
Ameer of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and peer of Charmonai Mufti Syed Muhammed Rezaul Karim made this demand while speaking at a rally in front of the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital after Jum’a prayers yesterday. Bus loads of supporters came to the meeting from different parts of the city and nearby areas well ahead of the Jum’a prayer, causing traffic congestions for hours in and around the mosque.
Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s earlier comment that the sculpture should be removed, Rezaul Karim warned that the people would build resistance shedding even their last drops of blood, if there is delay in removing the sculpture. “We will lay siege around the Supreme Court and remove the statue, if it is not removed by the authorities,” he added. Party presidium members Syed Mosaddeque Billah Al Madani, Nayebe Ameer Mufti Syed Foyzul Karim and Secretary General Maualna Yunus Ahmed and Joint Secretary General Maulana ATM Hemayetuddin, also spoke on the occasion.
