At least twelve activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student associate body of ruling Awami League, were injured in infighting between rival groups over occupying dormitory seats and establishing supremacy in Salimullah Muslim Hall of Dhaka University on Thursday night. The injured were treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and University Medical Center. The clash took place between the followers of Tahsan Ahmed Rasel, president of BCL unit of the hall, and Mehedi Hasan Taposh, secretary of the BCL unit of the hall, at 11:30 pm over taking control of hall seats.
Hall sources said, followers of Taposh forced a fresher out from his bed, who is a follower of Tahsan, as the bed was placed in a corridor between hall TV room and reading room. They also beat him up, which triggered the clash between the two groups. Activists of the two groups, armed with iron rods and sticks, chased each other and threw brick chips, causing panic among general students. Later, the university proctor, AM Amzad, and senior leaders of BCL came to the spot and brought the situation under control. Hall BCL Secretary Taposh said, “My activists removed a bed from the corridor as was obstructing us from moving freely. But Rasel’s followers beat up five of my activists brutally with iron rods. They also vandalized around 30 beds of the fresher at the balcony”. However, hall unit President Rasel rejected the allegations and said they had beaten up his activist first and also removed his bed. “Followers of Taposh, armed with iron rods and machetes, attacked us and seven activists were injured,” he added. Acting proctor AM Amzad said punitive measures would be taken against those responsible after investigations. Dhaka University unit BCL President Abid al Hasan said organisational steps would be taken against those involved in the clash.
