National Museum tomorrow

Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) is going to present an evening of Bangla Kheyal, directed by eminent composer of Bangladesh Azad Rahaman, at the main auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum (BNM), Shahbagh in the capital tomorrow at 6.30pm.

The programme includes Bangla Drupad, Dhamar, Kheyal, Thumri and Ghazals by four eminent classical vocalists of Bangladesh, Dr Asit Ray, Dr Padmini Dey Rupali,  Alif Laila and Bijon Mistri. Chorus song will also be presented by students of Sangskriti Kendra and other teaching institutions.
Azad Rahman is the founder chairman of Sangskriti Kendra (Centre for Education, Creative and Performing Arts), established in 1990 in Dhaka, which has organized several international music festivals. Rahman is a famous Bangladeshi composer who has given music directions for over 350 films of Bangladesh and also West Bengal. He received the National Film Award in 1993 for music direction and vocal music and again in 1997 for music direction. He has also received several other awards, including Best Composer and Conductor of Orchestra Award, 1980; Radio Bangladesh Staff Artist Award 1982; Zahir Raihan Film Award 1975; Purbani Film Award 1975; Chitrali Film Award 1975 and Desh Film Award 1978 for Music Direction.
Azad Rahaman has held many high administrative posts, including Director General, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy for two terms, Principal of Government Music College, Music Director in Radio Pakistan and thereafter Radio Bangladesh etc. He has also held high professional posts including Chairman, University Music Syllabus Committee; Judge, National Music Competition Committee since 1972 till date; Member, National Cultural Advisers Board etc.
Rahman is one of the pioneers of Bengali Kheyal and has written lyrics for many raagas. He produced the first Bangla Kheyal LP in the 1980s and has also composed and sung Bangla Qawwalis. He gave tune to the patriotic song of Bangladesh “Jonmo Amar Dhonno Holo Maago” sung by Feroza Begum and later by Sabina Yasmin. He also played Hindustani raagas on the piano and released as LP. He has travelled to many countries such as UK, USA, Japan, India, Germany, Russia, Italy etc.
In this programme, under the direction of Azad Rahaman, four eminent classical vocalists of Bangladesh will sing Bangla Drupad, Dhamar, Kheyal, Thumri and Bangla Ghazal. The performing artists are Dr Asit Roy, Professor, Department of Music, Rajshahi University, Dr Podminee Dey Rupali, Chairman, Department of Music, Rajshahi University, Alif Laila, Assistant Professor, Jatiyo Kobi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Mymensingh and Bijon Mistri, Classical Music Teacher, Chayyanaut. Accompanists are Alamgir Parvez Sumon, Assistant Professor, Rajshahi University, on Pakoaj, Iftekhar Alam Dollar on Tabla, Ratan Chandra Mazumder on harmonium, Bodruzzaman Tushar on Tanpura and Kaniz Fatema Jeba on Tanpura. Chorus classical song will also be presented by students of Sangskriti Kendra and other teaching institutions.
