Youth killed in AL factional clash

A youth was killed and 30 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Awami League (AL) at Banshgari village under Banshgari Union of Raipura upazila in Narsingdi yesterday noon. 

The deceased was identified as Sharfin (20) of Salimganj village under Banchharampur upazila in Brahmanbaria. He sustained bullet injury during the clash. 
Witnesses and sources in police said the clash was a result of a long standing dispute between Banshgari Union Parishad Chairman Sirajul Haque and Hafijur Rahman Shahed over assuming supremacy in the area. Both Sirajul and Hafizur are leaders of local unit of AL. 
Sirajul Haque and his supporters, armed with firearms and locally-made weapons, attacked rival Hafijur Rahman Shahed and his supporters around noon, sources said. Hafijur and his supporters launched a counter attack in a bid to save themselves, they added. 
Around 30 people were injured in the clash. On information, a team of riot police led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Humayun Kabir rushed to the spot. The police rescued the injured and sent them to local hospitals. Sharfin succumbed to injuries at the hospital. 
Sub Inspector (SI) Shahidul Islam of Raipura Police Station said the UP chairman joined Awami League from BNP immediately after the last national polls and since then has been at loggerheads with Hafijur, the ex-president of Banshgari union unit AL.
Executive Magistrate Humayun Kabir said both the groups clashed violating section 144 imposed in the area. 
Advocate Yunus Ali, secretary of the thana unit AL, said both the groups clashed over assuming supremacy in the area. He also said that Sirajul, a 6-time UP chairman, is new to the AL and that he tried to claim sway over the Hafijur group as well as in the area.
