Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) yesterday protested the restriction on journalists' access to the Election Commission Secretariat in the city's Agargaon area, reports UNB.
It also condemned the recent harassment of reporters covering EC events regularly at the EC Secretariat gate when they tried to enter it on Monday last.
In a joint statement, DRU president Shakhawat Hossain Badsha and its general secretary Mursalin Nomani condemned and protested the incident.
Noting that the Election Commission is an independent and constitutional body, they said it is unexpected and regretful that journalists were harassed in such a constitutional body.
The DRU leaders demanded journalists' access to all the EC Secretariat floors for the sake of press freedom and immediate punishment of those harassed the reporters.
The DRU leaders urged the Chief Election Commissioner, election commissioners and EC officials concerned to cooperate with journalists to perform their professional duty.
