Newly elected city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, nearly three months after being elected, formally took over charge of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) yesterday. Being the third elected mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, AJM Nasir took over charge from the acting mayor Mohammad Hossain. The elections to the Dhaka North, South and Chittagong City Corporations were held on April 28. However, newly elected mayor of Chittagong AJM Nasir Uddin had to wait nearly three months after the elections till July 25 to take over his charge as mayor as the term of the outgoing mayor ended on July 25.
Nasir also held a views exchange meeting with journalists of print and electronic media on the same day. While reading out his written statement at the meeting, Nasir said that there were three main responsibilities of city corporation- keeping the city clean, developing the communication system of the city and illuminating the city roads.
Replying to a query, the mayor said that restoring the administrative discipline to the corporation was his first and foremost task. “Of the public service related problems, perennial water congestion and cleanliness have turned out to be very important issues now,” the newly elected mayor said.
Replying to a question, Nasir claimed, “I have inherited the persistent waterlogging problem from my predecessors and addressing the chronic problem is continuous process. I can challenge you that the water congestion is not staying long as rainwater is receding fast. The silt excavating work in the canals and drains of the city has been continuing,” “However, I do not think that excavating earth from the bed of the canals and drains is a durable solution to the problem. To have a permanent solution; excavating silt on regular basis, freeing the canals from the clutches of the encroachers, evicting structures which create obstacles to the free flow of water in the canals and drains and implementing Drainage Master Plan 1995 is a must,” said Nasir.
“I assure the city dwellers that the water logging problem will be addressed to a great extent before the next monsoon and I will sit with the experts in this regard,” assured Nasir.
Referring to the present financial status of the corporation, Nasir said that he took charge of the mayoral office with a huge financial liability amounting to Tk 250 crore.
“I will adopt pragmatic steps for repaying the debt of the corporation in phases,” affirmed Nasir. “Well before taking over the charge formally, I have accelerated the conservancy work of the city, excavating earth from canals and drains quickly, launching drives to evict illegal establishment on the bank of the canals and pulling down unauthorised billboards,” informed Nasir.
