Woman’s throat-slit body found
The throat-slit body of a woman was recovered from a city hotel in the capital’s Uttara area early Tuesday.
Ali Hossain, officer-in-charge of Uttara West police Station, said a man along with a woman along with a four-year old baby rented a room of Nila Hotel in Abdullahpur area on Monday.
After staying some hours in the hotel, the man, Durjoy, along with the baby went out of the hotel around 4 am.
Due to Durjoy's suspicious movement, the authorities concerned of the hotel informed the matter to police who recovered the throat-slit body of the woman, Pushpo, from the hotel room breaking open the door around 5 am.
Amu to visit Russia,Germany, UK
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu will visit Russia, Germany and United Kingdom (UK) from April 21 to gather experiences for establishing the Bangladesh National Quality and Technical Regulatory Council (BNQTRC).
The minister will lead the six-member delegation during the visit, said a press release in the capital on Tuesday.
The other members of the team are Secretary-in-charge of the Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) M Mofizul Islam, Additional Secretary of Industries Ministry Begum Parag, Deputy Director of BNQTRC project M Anwarul Alam, Deputy Secretary of Industries Ministry M Kamrul Hasan and Assistant Personal Secretary (APS) to the Industries Minister FM Mahmud.
Three old grenades recovered
Three pieces of old and abandoned grenades were recovered while digging earth at Ashratpur Chalk Bazar area in Rangpur city yesterday, police sources said.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Thana ABM Zahidul Islam said that a group of day-labourers first spotted the grenades while digging earth for construction of a new building there yesterday morning.
Being informed, a special police squad led by Sub-inspector (SI) Fakhrul Islam from Kotwali Thana rushed to the spot, recovered the grenades and brought those to the Thana premises maintaining security.
“The recovered grenades are totally damaged and those might have been left by the defeated Pakistani occupation forces during the War of Liberation in 1971,” SI Fakhrul said.
Col Shawkat admitted to CMH
Former Deputy Speaker and incumbent Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Undertakings Col. (Retd) Shawkat Ali has been hospitalised with pneumonia.
He is now undergoing treatment at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital, said an official release yesterday. Jatiya Sangsad Deputy Speaker Md. Fazle Rabbi Miah, MP, yesterday visited Sawkat Ali at CMH.
The deputy speaker spent some time beside ailing Sawkat and inquired about his health.
Fire at Gazipur furniture market
A furniture market caught fire at Tongi Bazar in the city yesterday morning.
Sources at the fire service said the fire erupted at a furniture shop around 10 am and it soon engulfed several other adjacent shops. On information, three firefighting units rushed in and put out the blaze around 10:45 am.
However, the reason behind the fire could not be known.
Death anniv of Salimullah today
The 14th death anniversary of Salimullah Chowdhury, one of the organisers of the Liberation War in Feni area, will be observed today.
Salimullah Chowdhury was the first elected chairman of Chagalnaiya upazila parishad under Feni district.
He was also the chairman of Chagalnaiya union parishad and actively involved in various social works.
Salimullah Chowdhury established many educational institutions including Chagalnaiya Girls School, Chagalnaiya College and Feni Balika Bidhaniketan.
