Ctg BCL president, secretary sued

Police early yesterday filed two separate cases accusing 59 named and 400-500 unnamed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists and leaders of Chittagong city unit, including its president and secretary for vandalising under construction swimming pool and clashes with police on Tuesday.
The cases were filed with citys Kowtali Police Station. The case for attacking police was filed by Sub-Inspector Mahiuddin Roton and the vandalism case was filed by Swimming Pool construction Manager Shafiqul Islam Swapan.
BCL President of City unit Imran Ahmed Imu and General Secretary Nurul Azim Rony were accused in both cases, said Md Jahangir Alam, assistant commissioner of Police (Kowtali zone) of Chittagong Metropolitan.
The BCL president and secretary are known as follower of ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury. On Sunday, the BCLs city unit had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to stop the construction of the swimming pool claiming it was destroying the playground for emerging players. Earlier, on Apr 10, at a rally at the Laldighi Maidan, Awami League leader Mohiuddin Chowdhury gave a 15-day ultimatum to stop construction work on the swimming pool. But, the sports council started the construction of the pool about a week ago.
At 4pm they went to observe their previously declared programme at outer stadium but the police barred them to entre the swimming pool area then the clash erupted with police leaving at least 12 injured including three police men.
Imran Ahmed Imu, said These are false cases filed to harass us. Police barred our peaceful programme and fired on innocent leaders and activists.
While Nurul Azim Rony said, BCL is not responsible over the incident. I can challenge no police member was injured by our activists. The cops were injured by their own bullets but they filed case accusing BCL. We have requested police not to file case accusing us.
The BCL also called a protest rally at central Shahid Minar protesting the attack on BCL by police at 3pm yesterday, however, later they scraps the protest rally on request of central BCL, said Rony.
A swimming pool was constructing stretching 70,380 square feet area spending Tk11.40 crore at outer stadium adjacent to MA Aziz Stadium under the supervision of the Chittagong sports body CJKS. Mentionable, incumbent city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin is the general secretary of CJKS.
