Abahani Limited yesterday suffered another defeat in the ongoing AFC Cup football when they went down to JSW Bengaluru by 2-0 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium Bengalore, India.
Nishu Kumar opened the net five minutes before the break and substitute Marjan Jogovic doubled the margin on the 82nd minute to steer Bengaluru to remain on top in their group.
It was the third consecutive defeat for the Bangladesh Premier League champions as they have already conceded 2-0 to Maziya Sports and Recreation Club of Maldives and to Mohun Bagan 3-1. On the other hands, Bengaluru are on top of the Group E after grabbing their successive third win.
Abahani Limited, who began the match under pressure from the kick off, survived from early scares and took few minutes to move for attacks and also went closer to take the lead midway of the first half. The Bangladesh champions had the first opportunity on the 25th minute with Nabib Newaz Jibon dribbled past his marker and entered the danger area after receiving the ball from a combined attack, but the youngster finally failed to get by his pace with the ball while he had only the goalkeeper in front of him. Abahani, who looked a bit better in possessions and played with domination, produced the best chance to score goal but a Sohel Rana strong effort was denied by the Bengaluru keeper. Sohel Rana received a ball from Emeka Darlington and ran faster than the defenders before entering the box but his powerful right footer was saved by the goalkeeper on the 33rd minute.
The hosts Bengaluru, who were desperate to score a goal, went for the lead on the 40th minute when Abahani defender Mamun Meah could not mark the Bengaluru forward Nishu Kumar, who beat Mamun, came from behind to receive a through pass of Deniel in the open before placing into the far post (1-0). Abahani, after 50-50 possessions in the first half looked bleak when the hosts Bengaluru became more hostile to increase their lead and keeping the visitors under tremendous pressure. The hosts produced two successive chances but Mamun Meah made a goal-line save off a Deniel effort following another attempt by Marjan Jogovic on the 60th.
But, the Bengaluru foreign recruit Jogovic doubled the advantage on the 82nd minute and sealed the 2-0 deal for the runners up of the competition.
