Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee Chairman High Court Division Justice M Enayetur Rahim yesterday said that a specific law is needed to rehabilitate those who were released from jail after long terms incarceration without any trial. “There is no law to rehabilitate those people who have been languishing in jail for a long-time without any trial. A law should be formulated so that they could be rehabilitated soon after getting released from jail,” Justice M Enayetur Rahim said while addressing a ‘Meet the Press’ programme organised by Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee at the Conference Lounge of the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam, Supreme Court Bar Association Secretary M Mahbub Uddin Khokan, High Court Registrar Syed Dilzar Hossain and Supreme Court Additional Registrar Sabbir Foyez, among others, also addressed the programme.
Justice Enayetur Rahim said it would be easier for the government to rehabilitate them if a specific law in this regard existed in the country. He however, said that the government is thinking to compensate them in accordance with the Tort Act.
Following the media report, the legal aid committee took initiative for those who were in jail for a long time without any trial. Later, a number of accused people were released from jail as per the High Court order, Justice Rahim noted.
