Review decision to stop ‘sitting service’ Quader tells BRTA

In the wake of public transport crisis in the capital following a BRTA drive, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yestrerday asked the BRTA authorities to review its decision of stopping 'sitting service' of buses in a bid to resolve the crisis, reports UNB.
"It is not possible to force the bus owners to operate buses on road as many of the transport owners are influential and they are not less important. The crisis of the city bus service will be resolved soon through a discussion," he said. The Minister came up the remarks while talking to reporters in this regard at the secretariat. Quader said he asked the BRTA chairman to hold a
meeting with the leaders of transport owners, workers, civil society members and journalists to resolve the crisis. Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Samity, an association of owners of buses in the capital, at its general meeting on April 4 last decided that no bus would be allowed to operate in Dhaka city in the name of ‘Sitting Service’ or ‘Gate Lock’ from April 15 as additional fares are charged from passengers in the guise of such services. However, the implementation of the decision was delayed by a day.
As the BRTA authorities launched drive in the capital against ‘sitting service ‘and ‘gate lock’ service bus owners stopped operating buses in many areas, triggering crisis of public transports.
