RAJSHAHI: Distribution of identity (ID) cards with photos among fishermen in Mohanpur Upazila of Rajshahi district has started under different subsidized programmes, reports BSS. Under the fishermen registration and ID card distribution project of the department of fisheries, total 1,482 fish farmers will get ID in the upazila. Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Dr Amimul Ehsan said this while addressing a card distribution meeting at Mohanpur Government High School playground yesterday. Ayen Uddin, MP, addressed the programme as chief guest with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Alamgir Kabir in the chair. Among others, Principal of Mohanpur Upazila Mofiz Uddin Kabiraj and Public Prosecutor Abdus Salam also spoke. On the occasion, the guests distributed cards among 50 fishermen formally. Lawmaker Ayen Uddin said with this ID, the fishermen can avail the government assistance during the lean period. The government launched the project in 2012 involving Tk 81.8 crore with a view to identify the fishermen and providing them with assistances. He said after assuming power in 2009 the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for the overall development of the fisheries sector. Around 12.8 lakh fishermen directly depend on fishing for their livelihood. Of them, about 7.7 lakh are fishing in inland water-bodies while about 5.1 lakh are involved in fishing in coastal water-bodies or sea.
The fisheries sector has been playing an important role in the country’s socioe-conomic development while about 1.25 crore of the country’s people directly or indirectly depend on the sector.
