Cyclone Maarutha moves to Arakan

Special Correspondent

Cyclone Maarutha, which brewed in the south-east Bay of Bengal on Saturday, moved away towards the Arakan state of Myanmar, without having any impact on Bangladesh, at 3am yesterday (Monday). But the country, reeling under the effects of a mild heat wave, with temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius, mainly in the north-western region, had a brief respite from the sizzling heat yesterday.
However, the mercury may start rising in the next 72 hours, the Met Office said yesterday.
There will be rain after the rise in temperature again from today (Tuesday), AK Mallick, a  meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office, said. Rain will cool things a bit on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Mallick added.
The rain will work as a buffer against the spillover of the extreme heat wave of 40 plus raging across north-western India to Bangladesh, with winds blowing north-westerly, the meteorologist pointed out.
Jessore yesterday experienced the highest maximum temperature of 36.6C, up from 34C on Sunday. In neighbouring Chuadanga, it was 36.5C, up from 34.5C on Sunday. Dhaka recorded 34.1C yesterday, against 31.5C on Sunday.
