Save AL to save democracy, says Quader

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday (Monday) urged party leaders and workers to remain united to strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to save the AL and the country’s democracy. He was addressing a discussion at the Sheikh Hasina Mancha at Mujibnagar. Health and family welfare minister Mohammed Nasim chaired the discussion. AL central leaders Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Abdur Rahman MP, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, SM Kamal, Iqbal Hossain Apu and others were present. The discussion was organised to recall the history, as on this day in 1971 the nation witnessed the oath-taking of the country’s first government.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, called upon the party leaders and workers to remain alert so that unproductive and incompetent people are not inducted into the AL.  He criticised the BNP for not observing the historic Mujibnagar Day, saying that those who do not observe the day, do not belive in the spirit of the Liberation War.  At the same time, the AL general secretary criticised BNP chief Khaleda Zia for referring to the Prime Minister as just  “Hasina”. “Khaleda Zia deliberately calls Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina just ‘Hasina’ to insult our leadership. This is very unfortunate,” he said.
About Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent Indian visit, Quader said Khaleda Zia is jealous because extra honour was given to Hasina by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. About the BNP’s movement, the AL leader said the BNP has failed to launch any movement against the government because people do not support their violent movement. Speaking at the programme, AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim called upon the BNP to take part in the general election slated for 2019 instead of resorting to violent programmes.
“We want the BNP to contest the elections. We don’t want to score a goal in the open field,” he said. He called upon party leaders and workers to remain united to take the AL to power again in the next polls. Earlier in the morning, the AL general secretary said the BNP is trying to ensure that no deal on Teesta waters has been reached under the Hasina administration. The AL leader made the statement to journalists soon after he paid his respects to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at 32 Dhanmondi Road on the occasion of Mujibnagar Day.  “All the BNP does is create issues. It is now trying to create an anti-India issue,” he said in response to a question.
