Fire at TCB building put out
A fire broke out at Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) building in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area on Monday morning and it was extinguished within 30 minutes.
Fire service sources said the fire broke out from the ground floor of the building around 7:40am. On information, two firefighting units from the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters rushed in and put out it at 8:10am, said a duty officer at the fire station. It is still not clear what caused the fire.
3 human ‘traffickers’ held
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three suspected members of a human-trafficking gang and rescued two women from Gotatikar village under Mogla Bazar thana of Sylhet on Sunday night.
A team of RAB-9 conducted a raid on a house, owned by Ataur Rahman, at the village around 11:30pm and arrested the gang members Zakir, 35, hailing from Noakhali district, Ekhlasur, 27, hailing from Kanaighat upazila and Solaiman, 29, Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet, said a RAB official in the capital. The RAB members also rescued two female trafficking victims from the house.
794 phensedyl bottles seized
Police yesterday (Monday) arrested a man along with 794 bottles of phensidyl from city’s bus terminal area under Chandagon police station in Chittagong.
The arrestee was identified as Didural Alam, hailing from Feni Distirct. Saiful Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandagaon police station said, “Acting on trip of we have launched a drive at Bus terminal area where we intercepted a private car was carrying 794 bottles of phensidl in a box. He was carrying the drugs from Feni to Chittagong.” A case was filed in this connection under Narcotics Control Act, said the OC.
Workshop held at BRRI
A day-long workshop on “Introducing, Activities and Research Plan” of the Strengthening Physical Infrastructure and Research Activuities (SPIRA) project of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) was held yesterday at the BRRI’s auditorium in Gazipur.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Mohammed Fazle Wahid Khondaker was the chief guest in the workshop while BRRI Director General Dr Bhagya Rani Banik in the chair. Joint Chief of the planning wing of the Ministry of Agriculture Mohammed Anwar Hossain, BRRI Director (Administration and Common Service) Dr Mohammed Shahjahan Kabir and BRRI Director (Research) Dr Mohammed Ansar Ali spoke among others. Principal Scientific Officer of BRRI Adaptive Research Division and Director of the SPIRA project Dr Mohammed Humaun Kabir presented the key note paper in the workshop.
