Lady Gaga drops surprise new single ‘The Cure’ at Coachella

Just a day ago, Lady Gaga wrapped her headlining set at Coachella, and as fans began to head for the exit, the superstar dropped one last line: “My new single ‘The Cure’ is available on iTunes now.” The pop singer had excited the audience when she announced halfway through her performance that she was going to debut a new song entitled “The Cure,” but at the time, she didn’t mention anything about it being a new single, or that it would be available immediately following the second day of the highest-grossing festival in America. “The Cure” is a noticeable departure from anything Gaga has ever released before, even though her repertoire now spans many different genres and styles. The track melds plenty of finger-snapping and a beat that might be more at home in the R&B world, and then quickly jumps to a more contemporary electronic dance-pop breakdown for the chorus, which sounds perfect for the upcoming summer months. The song is something of an odd choice for Gaga, who has never ventured into this musical territory before. She has always been the type to push pop forward and take chances, but “The Cure” sounds immediately, though vaguely, familiar, and it’s a bit too safe for her brand. It’s a fun, catchy tune, but it is missing the danger of “Bad Romance,” the ability to fill a dancefloor like “Telephone,” the high-art glamour of “Applause” or even the career-changing riskiness of “A-Yo” or “Million Reasons.” It’s not a complete disappointment, and some fans will likely be thrilled, but it feels like Gaga has taken another step away from that special something that always made her singles hit so hard.
