‘Hasina trying to woo Hefajat for Muslim votes’

AL to face trial for enforced disappearances, says BNP
UNB

BNP yesterday alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is trying to woo Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh to get Muslim votes in the next general election, reports UNB. "She (PM) is now trying to bag Muslim votes in favour of her party as she realised that the situation is not good after signing deals with India. Though she earlier harassed Ahmed Shafi and mocked Alem-Ulema and killed many people by attacking their rally, she is now unprecedentedly trying to establish good ties with them," said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a discussion, he further said, "Your ministers used to taunt him calling him (Shafi) as Tetul hujur. As you've understood that a vast majority of people aren't with your government, you're now going to woo him. You're now holding meetings with Alem-Ulema with a hope to get their votes as your party will face a debacle in the next polls.
Rizvi came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion arranged by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal Bhasantek unit at Maulana Bhasani Auditorium at Nayapaltan. He said though Hasina does not follow any religion,
she sued to wear hijab with tajbi in her hands during national election to ensure her party's victory. "After election, she tries to be a progressive person. It's her double-standard character and serious hypocrisy."
The BNP leader said the Prime Minister will not be able to convince the country's people by holding meetings with Alem-Ulema as they know about her double-standard.
Mentioning that 158 unions went to polls today at different parts of the country, he alleged that the ruling party men captured most of the polling stations and stuffed ballots and rigged votes.
Rizvi said though their party informed the Election Commission of the election irregularities, it did not take any action. "No fair election is possible under the current CEC. Voters won't be able to exercise their franchise in the elections to be held under him. We strongly denounce and protest the EC's role in today's (Sunday's) election."
Meanwhile, BNP senior leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury yesterday warned that Awami League will have to face a trial of international standard someday for making around 500 BNP leaders and activists, including Ilias Ali, disappeared.
"Our about 500 leaders and activists have been made disappeared. We'll hold trial of international standard of the incidents of killing and enforced disappearances took place during the Awami League regime. The world's noted jurists and judges will be engaged with the trial," he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, "We won't do any injustice to them (AL), as the trial will be transparent, and they'll be punished as per international rules."
Swadhinata Forum, a pro-BNP platform, arranged the programme at Dhaka Reporter's Unity (DRU), demanding safe return of BNP leader M Ilias Ali who was made disappeared five years back.
Referring to a recent report aired by a Swedish Radio, Khasru said the Swedish Prime Minister and Foreign Minister demanded the trial of the incidents after fair investigations following the report. He said the European Parliament and many hum rights bodies have long been demanding the trial of the enforced disappearances. "We must take preparation to hold the trial both at home and at international level to get rid of it."
Khasru, a BNP standing committee member, urged the government to take steps for the safe return of Ilias Ali and other disappeared BNP leaders and activists. He said Awami League has now become so much desperate that it is now establishing relation with Hefajat-e-Islam. "Players start committing so many fouls when they see their team is on the verge of defeat. Even, they make suicidal shots out of desperation. Awami League's condition is now like that."
