Ashraful vows to come back strongly

While his team is hardly expected to keep them in championship race, on personal account Mohammad Ashraful has the ambition to show he has still left something to offer for the country.

He had already made a comeback to the cricket with the country’s first class cricket tournament National Cricket League after serving his ban for the match-fixing scandal. But the Dhaka Premier League is considered as the stage for him to draw the attention because of the magnitude and competitiveness of the league.
Ashraful however failed miserably in the first match as he scored just 6 runs. His performance was the catalyst behind his team Kalabagan Krira Chakra’s five-wicket defeat to Prime Bank Cricket Club.
But the batsman, considered as the first poster boy of Bangladesh cricket, refused to give up as he vowed to comeback with strong performance at some point of the league.
“We need to show a good performance as a team and as an individual. We should send a message to the big teams that we are capable of giving them tough time,” said Ashraful.
“Hopefully I would find my form and my team will turnaround from the defeat of the first match,” hoped the captain of Kalabagan Krira Chakra.
Ashraful’s performance in the NCL was not up to the mark for which he has some regret but he knows he could amend that with the performance in the Premier League.
“I couldn’t achieve my goal in the NCL but I don’t want to miss my opportunity to do well in this league. I want to prove that I have the appetite for runs and I am still capable of making a comeback into the national team.”
As Bangladesh got a settled unit and there are some promising young players in the pipeline, Ashraful knows it would be tough for him to get into the national team at this age. But he doesn’t want to give up.
“I have some cricket left still, so I don’t want to give up. I’ll try my best. The rest will depend on the national team management.”
Ashraful’s Kalabagan however will take on Mohammedan Sporting Club on Tuesday, a match he targets to get back amongst runs.
“Mohammedan is a popular team, so making runs against them will boost my confidence.”
Meanwhile, the second round of the Dhaka Premier League starts today with three matches at different venues across the city.
Reigning champions Abahani Limited will take on Partex Sporting Club at BKSP-3 ground in their bid to continue the winning-streak. Abahani got off to a good start to the league with a five-wicket win over Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity, a match in which they chased 293 runs comfortably thanks to a brilliant century from Mosaddek Hossain Saikat. Partex on the other hand is coming off a 78-run loss to Prime Doleshwar Club.
At Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, the current runners-up Prime Doleshwar would face Brothers Union, a team which lost their first game to the Legends of Rupganj by four wickets.
At BKSP-4 ground  Rupganj however locks horns with Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club which snatched a narrow two-wicket win over Victoria in its first match.
