The tropical cyclone ‘Maarutha’, which started in the early hours (4am) of yesterday (Sunday), was poised to intensify further in a north-northeasterly direction and likely to make a landfall, with a wind speed of 50km per hour, on the coast of Myanmar around midnight on Sunday, Met office sources said. The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist distant Warning Signal Two on Sunday morning. All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay had been advised not to venture into the sea.
“We may upgrade the cautionary signal. The cyclone has moved close to the Myanmar coast,” the Met office sources said around 7pm yesterday.
Meanwhile, Dr SMA Rashid, an animal biologist from St. Martins Island, said around 5.30pm yesterday that the sea around them was rough. All boat services between the island and the mainland had been suspended, he added. “In case of high winds and sea surges, we would move to the cyclone shelter on the island,” Dr Rashid said. However, no warning for sea surges had been issued till yesterday evening.
Meanwhile, shortly after the cyclone started, Dhaka city and its suburbs experienced high winds with little rains. However, there was no report of any damage or casualties. The winds and the rains along with isolated hailstorms brought the temperatures down since Saturday evening.
