B Chy moots PM’s old proposal again

Former president and chief of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Prof. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, yesterday called upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to discuss her proposal given prior to the January 5, 2014 elections to Khaleda Zia, the Leader of the Opposition at that time . “Holding a free and fair election is possible only if the honourable Prime Minister takes an initiative to revive and implement the proposal before the next polls,” he said while speaking at a discussion meeting on election-time governance at the National Press Club. The former president said Khaleda Zia made a great mistake in rejecting the proposal, wherein she had been offered five ministerial posts, including that of the public administration and information ministries. The Adarsha Nagorik Andolon organised the meeting to mark one year of its president, Mahmudul Hasan, in office.
Among others, Ganasastha Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Nagorik Oikya convenor Mahmudur Rahman Manna, and Nagorik Forum chairman Abdullahil Masud also spoke on the occasion.
Prof. Chowdhury expressed regret that the citizens, who had been eagerly waiting for a resolution to the Teesta water-sharing problem, have been disappointed again.
“The Indian premier Narendra Modi could not support Bangladesh in the (Teesta water) issue as West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is against it. The question arises whether New Delhi is powerful or Kolkata—Mamata or Modi,” he said. Criticising Banerjee for her statement that there is no water in the Teesta and her alternative proposal for water-sharing, the BDB leader asked that if there is no water in the Teesta, what is the problem for her (Mamata) to share it (Teesta water) with Bangladesh. He quoted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s statement on her India visit: “We got at least something. We asked for water but got electricity instead.”
