Govt to launch rehab campaign in haor

The government is set to launch a massive rehabilitation campaign to negate onslaughts of recent floods destroying huge standing crops in haor region in six northeastern districts, officials said yesterday.
“We will distribute fertiliser and seeds free of cost among the flood affected farmers of the haor region before the next boro season," Agriculture Secretary Mohammad Mainuddin Abdullah told BSS exclusively yesterday.
He said to overcome the loss, Agricultural Extension Department (DAE) by now issued an instruction for their field level officials the haor areas to motivate farmers to cultivate aus and transplanted aman in the highland, which are generally unused for agriculture. 
He said this as President Abdul Hamid is set to visit today the affected northeastern region amid reports that the unexpected and prolonged deluge affected more than 4 lakh farmers in six districts.
Officials estimated that the flash flood by now washed away standing boro crops on 1,41,204 hectares out of 4.50 lakh hectares land in the region.  “We planned to bring under Aus and then Aman cultivation the entire high land of the haor areas to minimize the loss,” said DAE Director General Mohammad Manjurul Hannan.
