2 RU BCL men suspended over extortion charge

Two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were suspended yesterday for their alleged involvement with charging extortion from a Rajshahi University RU) student.

Sources said two leaders of the BCL of the university unit allegedly confined a student at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Rajshahi University on Sunday for an hour and demanded Tk 6,000 as extortion otherwise threatening him to hand over to the police as an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir. 
The victim was identified as Abdullah Al-Mamun, a final year student of Accounting and Information System Department of the university. Talking to the reporter, Al-Amin alleged that Jakariya Zaman Jack, former assistant general secretary of BCL RU unit and Anik Mahmud Boni, an activist of the unit have been threatening him in different times, and taking money from his possession several times.
He said that Jack took him to his room at Sher-e-Bangla Hall at around 10:30am on Sunday while he was taking his breakfast at Tukitaki Chhattar of the university.
 “After reaching his room, he (Jack) demanded Tk 10,000 as extortion threatening me of handing over to police”, he alleged.
While I told them that I did not have the money, then, they forced me to contact with my parents and asked my father to send them the stipulated amount, threatening that they would hand over to law enforcers treating as Shibir activist”, he also said. 
Later, they released me just after my father sent Tk 6,000 in bkash outlet, he said. Later, he verbally informed about the matter to the university proctor Professor Mujibul Huq Azad Khan.
However, the duo BCL men denied the allegation of taking extortion, adding that they, even, did not know Mamun. Contacted, BCL RU unit president Golam Kibriya said “We found the allegation them as true and we have immediately suspended them  from the unit over the incident”.
