Bangladeshi teenager Sharmin Akter, a winner of the 2017 International Women of Courage award from the US State Department, yestersaid girls should not lose their confidence in avoiding early and forced marriage, reports UNB.
"The recognition of my protest against early marriage is an achievement of Bangladesh. My award will remain an example for them who want to resist the early and forced marriage," said the gallant Bangladeshi girl at a reception in the capital.
Edward M. Kennedy Center for Public Service and the Arts awarded the reception to her and arranged a Press Meet with Sharmin Akter at the EMK centre.
Sharmin, the young activist against early and forced marriage, shared her painful stories at the function.
She received the award from US First Lady Melania Trump and the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas A Shannon on March 29.
Sharmin demonstrated exceptional courage and self-reliance by refusing to be coerced into marrying a man who is decades older than her.
"I showed courage to resist my mother's attempts to marry me off and could protect my right to continue education, when I was only 15," she said.
