Huji chief Mufti Hannan, two aides executed
Mufti Abdul Hannan

Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and his two associates Delwar Hossain alias Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul were hanged last night for their  grenade attack on former British envoy Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet in 2004. Of them, Mufti Hannan and Bipul were executed at Kashimpur Central Jail at 10:01pm, said Mizanur Rahman, jail superintendent of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail.
Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin was present at Kashimpur Central Jail.
Ripon was hanged at Sylhet Central Jail at the same time, said senior jail super M Sagir Mia.
Before their executions, members of the families of Mufti Hannan, Bipul and Ripon had their final meetings with the trio in the respective jails. Prisoner Raju along with two others acted as hangmen.
Their bodies will be sent to their respective villages for burial.
The three militants were hanged as President Abdul Hamid rejected their petitions seeking presidential clemency.
On March 19, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the death sentence of Mufti Hannan, Ripon and Bipul after hearing the review petitions filed by the three death-row convicts.
On December 7, 2016, an SC bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, upheld the death penalty of the three in the case rejecting appeals filed by the Huji chief and Bipul challenging the High Court verdict that had upheld their death sentence awarded by the tribunal.
On February 11, 2016, the High Court delivered the verdict upholding the death sentence for the three.
In 2004, the then British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury came under a grenade attack while coming out of Hazrat Shahjalal's shrine in his hometown Sylhet.
The envoy and 40 employees of the Sylhet district administration were injured in the attack.
Mufti Hannan is said to be the mastermind of 13 terrorist attacks, including an attempt on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's life, perpetrated by the banned militant group Huji.
Educated at a madrasa, Mufti Hannan hails from Gopalganj's Kotalipara. He faces trial for planting a bomb made with 76kg of explosives near the venue of a public rally addressed by Sheikh Hasina at Kotalipara in 2000.
Mufti Hannan had also been sentenced to death for the 2001 bombings at Dhaka's Ramna Batamul on the Bengali New Year celebrations. On Mar 6, this year, a prison van carrying him from court to Gazipur's Kashimpur prison came under a bomb attack, which the police say was an attempt to free him.
Assistant sub-inspector Kamal Uddin died on the spot while two constables -- Rubel Ahmed and Habil Miah -- succumbed to injuries at a hospital.
