BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said the parliamentary elections must be held under a ‘neutral administration’, regardless of the name it will be called, as a free and fair election is not possible under Awami League government.
“I won’t say that caretaker government is a must (to hold national election). But the election has to be held under a neutral government--no matter what name is given to it. That election will be free, fair and participated by all political parties,” she said.
The BNP chief came up with her party’s latest stance on the general election while exchanging views with the newly elected office bearers of Brahmanbaria District Bar Association.
“In the last three city polls, it was proved again that no fair election is possible under Awami League. We want a credible election to be held under a neutral administration no matter what will be its name,” Khaleda said adding people will get opportunity of casting their votes if it is held under a neutral administration.
“But this illegal government will not allow to hold a neutral election as they know it very well that they would not be able to stay in power anymore if neutral election is held. And they will not be able to return to power if they loose it once,” added Khaleda.
Mentioning that the caretaker government system was introduced following a strong demand from the Awami League and
Jamaat, the BNP chief said the ruling party scrapped the system as it is afraid of holding fair polls.
Apparently inviting her arch rival Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to end their rivalries, Khaleda said, “Why don’t we see each other’s face? Why don’t we sit together? We had introduced the parliamentary forms of government sitting together.”
Criticising the government for, what she said, obstructing the political activities of the opposition parties, the former opposition leader said there is no democracy and the rule of law in the country. “Political parties cannot arrange any rally, processions and even human chain programme in the country. The government has turned the entire country into a jail. Their only task is to file cases against BNP leaders and activists,” she alleged. “We hope good sense will prevail upon them. Or else, their consequences will be very dire.”
Khaleda alleged that people are getting killed in road crashes everyday due to the bad shape of country’s roads and highways. “About 242 people were killed in the last 10 days due to sordid condition of the roads, but
the government is least bothered about it,” she said.
Accusing the government of trying to destroy the BNP, she said, “No one will beable to annihilate BNP as its root is very deep rooted in the soil of Bangladesh and the hearts of its people.
Mentioning that the country is passing through a critical juncture, she said, “There is no security for people in the country. There is no peace as an anarchic situation has been created everywhere. People have lost their freedom of expression and the media has also lost freedom. People are even being denied justice.”
