RANGPUR: A court here on Tuesday sentenced a young man to life term rigorous imprisonment till death for abducting, confining and murdering a minor boy after failing to realise ransom here some seven years back, reports BSS.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of Court-1 of Rangpur Chand Mohammad Abdul Alim Al Razee handed down the verdict against convict Maruf Hassan Manik in a crowded courtroom on the Tuesday afternoon.
At the same time, the court also fined Manik Taka 50,000, or in default, he would suffer more two-year jail term.
The court also sentenced wife Runa Akhter Bristi of convict Manik to three years jail term for assisting her husband in committing the crime.
Manik was present on the dock during pronouncement of the verdict while Bristi had been on the run since getting bail in the case.
According to the prosecution, Manik of Par Boalia village under Sadar upazila in Naogaon married Bristi, a class ten student, of the same area following love affairs in September, 2011.
The couple fled their village soon after marriage, came to Rangpur city and started living at house of one Abul Karim Bhola in Khalifapara Moholla as tenants.
At one stage, Manik and his wife tactfully abducted class-two student Himel, 8, son of housemaster Bhola, confined him for ransom and murdered him on November 11, 2011.
The couple buried the body into the heap of sand near their rented house.
Later, the couple fled their rented house on November 14, 2011 creating doubt among the local people when police recovered the body from the sand heap on the same day.
Father of the victim filed a murder case against the couple and police arrested the couple from their house in Par Boalia village under Sadar upazila in Naogaon on November 15, 2011.
After investigation into the case, Kotwali Thana police submitted charge sheet against the couple to the court in 2012 when the trial began.
After examining witnesses of the case during the long-time hearing, the court found the accused couple guilty and handed down the verdict against them considering their young ages when they committed the crime.
Additional Public Prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Abdus Sattar stood for the state while senior lawyer Advocate Basunia Ariful Haque defended the accused side.
