Niko graft case against Moudud to continue

STAFF REPORTER

The High Court yesterday lifted its earlier order that had stayed the trial proceedings against BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed in the Niko graft case for eight weeks.

After final hearing on a rule, the HC bench comprising Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath yesterday rejected a petition filed by Moudud Ahmed challenging the legality of the trial proceedings against him in the case.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, counsel for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), told reporters that there is no legal bar for the trial court concerned to resume the trial proceedings against Moudud in Niko corruption case following the HC order.
The ACC on December 9, 2007 filed the Niko graft case against Moudud and four others in connection with a Tk 1.37 billion loss to the national exchequer caused by the signing of an oil-gas exploration agreement with Niko during the previous BNP regime.
Later on May 5, 2008, it submitted charge sheet against 11 people.
On July 9, 2008, the HC adjourned the proceedings of the case.
The HC on December 1 last year stayed the trial proceedings against Maudud in this case after hearing a petition filed by him seeking a stay on the proceedings against him.
BSS adds: The High Court yesterday dismissed a petition of BNP leader Air Vice Marshal (retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, pleading a quash the proceedings of a graft case lodged against him.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order, also dismissing a rule issued earlier in this regard.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on December 18, 2007, filed the case against Altaf with Ramna Police Station for amassing illegal wealth. The former home minister later filed a writ against the case with the High Court and the court issued the rule, staying the proceedings of the case.
