With the start of summer, seasonal fruits have started arriving in the market and the most attractive among them is watermelon. One can now see piles of watermelon everywhere in fruits markets in the capital as elsewhere in the country. The peak time of mango is still several weeks away and once mangos of different varieties, litchis, jackfruits, etc. will start arriving the time for watermelon will be no longer in the market. In the sweltering heat now, nothing better one can think of than a slice of watermelon taken out of your home refrigerator. It instantly gives you the necessary refreshment.
But is the fruit piece harmless? Is it healthy? Past experiences tell us for sure that there may be poisonous chemicals laced with the watermelon. The profit hungry people in the fruit business make the fruit attractive by injecting artificial red colour and harmful sweetener into the watermelon that can actually upset your stomach rather than being useful to your health. There was news last year that children in fact died after eating chemically treated watermelon.
That is why when health conscious people see fruits in the fruit markets or their photos in newspapers—this newspaper front-paged one such picture yesterday—or video clips in news channels, the question immediately comes to his mind: are they safe for health? They fall in a dilemma: you have money in the pocket but are unsure of the quality of fruit that you are buying.
Yes, the government has to ensure that the fruits consumers buy from the market are harmless. The law enforcing agencies have to be extra vigilant now so that dishonest people in the fruit business do not become able to contaminate their items as they did in the past. If they become conscious, and seriously at that, and take measures accordingly, the consumers can hope to eat mangos, litchis, bananas, etc., this season without any of their dangerous ripening or preservative agents.
If the government does not come to stand beside the consumers, the unsuspecting among them will surely fall victim to dishonest businessmen. The law enforcers have to purge our markets quite often with rigorous punishment for the culprits and that is how we can hope that the quality of items in the markets will improve.
