Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the students’ front of the ruling Awami League (AL), is set to elect its next central president and general secretary through direct voting after a hiatus of two years in its council. The last BCL council was held in July, 2011.
Ending all speculations, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the AL president and chief organizational patron of the BCL, yesterday made it clear that the next central BCL president and general secretary will be elected through direct voting by the BCL councilors came to the council from across the country.
However, sources said that the next BCL president and secretary are likely to be Md Saifur Rahman Sohag, current environment secretary of BCL, and central BCL assistant secretary Zakir Hossain, respectively. Sohag completed his Honors and Masters degree from the department of Linguistic at the University of Dhaka while Zakir Hossain completed his studies from the department of political science at the same university.
Earlier, yesterday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the much-awaited 28th central council of the BCL held at Suhrawardi Udyan in the capital. Voting for electing the new council will be held at 10am at the Institution of Engineers today. A total of 80 forms have been sold for the president post while the number is 162 for the general secretary post.
Meanwhile, some heavyweight candidates have already lost their hope to be the central BCL president or general secretary due to age limitations. But they are also in the race.
BCL sources said several names had come up as strong contenders for the posts of president and general secretary.
They include BCL Joint General Secretary Shamsul Kabir Rahat, Deputy Law Secretary Biplob Hossain Polash, central committee member Enamul Haque Prince, and BCL leaders Shahidul Islam Shahed, Anwar Hossain Anu and Azizul Haque Rana.
