Rain-hit Ctg Test ends in draw

The first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa ended in a tame draw after rain washed out the fifth and final day at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong yesterday. The umpires’ decision came at 12 noon after continuous showers made ground conditions unfit for resumption of play.
This was Bangladesh’s first draw against the Proteas, having lost the previous eight Tests, seven of which were by an innings margin. Bangladesh indeed has failed to stretch any Test to the fifth day against South Africa. This was the one where they managed to do this, though weather played a key factor.
The fate of the game was already decided after the entire fourth day was lost due to rains. The fifth day was a mere formality with the teams looking to do some match practice before going into the second Test, starting on Thursday in Dhaka.
The match, however, was delicately poised after South Africa reduced the deficit to 17 runs from 78, scoring 61 for no loss in the second innings after Bangladesh notched up 326, its highest against the Proteas, in the first innings. Both captains claimed that their respective teams were in a dominant position in the Test and would have won the match if weather had not played spoilsport.
While Hashim Amla pointed out about the visitors’ supremacy in the second innings, Mushfiqur Rahim claimed that the Proteas could have lost two or three wickets to accelerate the innings.
“I am sure they would come in to play with an attacking mind set so as to press for a result and, in doing so, they would have lost two or three wickets which could create pressure on them. And we could have been in a dominating position,” Mushfiqur said.
Mushfiqur said it was his team’s “best performance” in this format. “After doing well in ODI cricket, there were relentless questions on why we can’t perform equally well in Test cricket. We have a point to prove. I am not saying that we have already proved our worth in just one Test, but we are on the right track. I think it’s a start towards the zenith. This match will boost us psychologically and it’s possible to do well in Test cricket as well if we continue with this performance,” he added.
