Flower growers passing busy 
time ahead of Pahela Baishakh

Flower farmers in Jhenidah are enjoying brisk business ahead of ‘Pahela Baishakh’. Over fifteen thousand people including flower farmers and workers are very busy now, to provide fresh flower and gain extra profit, said Shaheb Ali of Bor Ghighati village in Kaligang upazila of the district.Md Habib of Ganna village in sadar upazila said a couple of months ago, a bunch of 8-10 big garlands of marigold was sold at Tk 120/140, but now it is being sold at Tk 180/200 and just before Pahela Baisakh it will be Tk 300 to Tk 400.
General secretary of Jhenidah flower Kollyan Samity Jamir Hossain said truly over five thousand businessmen and over ten thousand workers are passing very busy time before Bangla Nababarsha at present. The production cost of flower on each bigha was around Tk 16 to 18 thousand in this season including irrigation cost, fertiliser cost, pesticide cost, labour cost, marketing and other costs. Marigold flowers can be cultivated thrice in a year. It will bring much profit this time, he added.
Kutub Uddin, a grower of Baliyadanga village in Kaliganj upazila said over 20 to 25 flower laden trucks go to Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Sylhet, Narayanganj, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Feni, Comilla and Khulna and 30 other districts per day before this occasion of Pahela Boishakh.
Shah Mohammad, Akramul Haque, deputy director of Jhenidah Department of Agriculture Extension said this time farmers will make profit of at least Tk 50 lakh. He also added that flower is a rotten product and in this country there is not enough facility to keep it for a long time. As a result, normally flower of over Tk 1 to 1.5 crore get destroyed every season.
He further added that in a season farmers can pluck up flowers thrice from the plant and can sell it in the local market. A farmer can earn at least Tk 40,000 to Tk 50,000 from one bigha of land cultivating marigold flower and Tk 70,000 to Tk 80,000 from cultivation of other flowers. This year there has been good production of flowers. A total of 208 hectares of land in the district was brought under flower cultivation this year.
