No benefit from Hasina’s India visit: BNP

Khaleda briefs media today

BNP leaders yesterday observed that Bangladesh has not benefited from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent visit to India. In an immediate reaction to the Prime Minister’s press conference on the outcome of her visit to New Delhi, they said the Premier has not only failed to achieve what the people had asked for, she has actually returned with something they did not want. Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be addressing a press conference this afternoon to give her party's formal reaction over the PM’s visit to India. The decision was taken hours after the PM’s briefing. The press conference will be held at 4:30pm at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office, says a press release signed by Khaleda Zia’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan.
“We cannot describe the Prime Minister’s visit as successful, since she failed to resolve the Teesta water-sharing problem,” said BNP standing committee member Lt. Gen. (retd) Mahbubur Rahman.
He said the citizens had been eagerly waiting for a solution to the Teesta issue, but in vain. “It is not acceptable for this issue to remain unresolved for such a long period of time,” he added.
The former army chief observed that though a draft was prepared in 2011, an agreement could be signed, based on it.
He refused to accept West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s claim that there is no water in the Teesta and insisted that Bangladesh be given its fair share of whatever little water there might be.
The BNP leader said he believed the Premier had also expected a solution to the Teesta water-sharing issue, but her expectations were not fulfilled. BNP special affairs secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon said the Premier brought what the people did not want and failed to bring what they had asked for. “The lesson from the Prime Minister’s visit is that all Indian political parties, whether ruling or Opposition, have a similar policy of gaining an upper hand over Bangladesh. Unfortunately, our politicians have failed to take a united stand for the interest of the country and its people,” he said.
