The Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2016-2017, the most coveted league of the country, rolls onto the ground today with three matches in different venues across the city. All the matches begin at 9am.
Defending champions Abahani Limited will take on Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium. The other two matches between Prime Doleshwar and Partex, Legends of Rupganj and Brothers Union will be held at BKSP-3 and 4 ground respectively.
Since its inauguration in 1974–75 the league has been the premier club cricket competition in Bangladesh. It gained List A status starting with the 2013–14 tournament, thus superseding the National Cricket League One-Day as Bangladesh's main List A competition.
The passion is palpable this season, specially for the participation of the national stars from the first game. The national players however will play first three rounds of the league before they fly to Sussex, England to set up a practice camp ahead of the tri-nation series in Ireland and ICC Champions Trophy.
Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sports Club, dubbed as the traditional superpowers in Club Cricket of Bangladesh, this year formed more compact teams for the List A tournament.
Abahani clinched the title for 17 times while Mohammedan took it home for ninth times with the last came in 2009-2010 season. This year the Motijheel-based team is considered as the most favourite to win the title for the first time after seven years.
Apart from roping in the likes of Tamim Iqbal and Mehedi Hasan Miraj, what was their calculative strategy was their bench strength. They recruited the players who are most reliable in the domestic circuit and thereby enhanced their chance to regain the title.
Mohammad however will face a tough competition in the first game as they will take on Gazi Group on Thursday in their first game. Gazi Group also formed a strong team.
