Bangladesh pace bowling sensation Mustafizur Rahman left the country yesterday to join his IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), hoping that he would start from where he left in the last season with the team.
Mustafizur was key in helping Sunrisers clinching their maiden IPL title, picking up 17 wickets in 16 matches as he baffled the batsmen with his trademark cutter and slower. He was also adjudged as the emerging player of the tournament in the last season.
“I know the expectation from the people of my country will be high this time around. I’ll try my best,” said the soft-spoken bowler who is adorably called as ‘The Fizz’.
“I performed well in the last year. So I hope I can continue that and help my team.”
Hyderabad this year recruited Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan who had already stamped his mark in the tournament, trading five wickets in the last two matches. Rashid’s impact is also phenomenal like Mustafizur.
Since there is bar that no team could play four overseas players, it seems this time it would be tough for Mustafizur to get into the team. He however remained unfazed.
“I have no headache whether I will be included into the final squad. If I play, I’ll give my best.”
Mustafizur played 16 games in Sunrisers' title-winning campaign of 2016, but broke down soon after with a shoulder injury while representing Sussex in the English County Championship, forcing him to undergo surgery in August. He was then included for the New Zealand tour in December-January. He played two ODIs and two T20Is, but was ruled out of the Tests due to a hamstring niggle.
The 21-year-old then took time off and returned to domestic cricket after regaining match fitness, which put him on the plane to Sri Lanka, where Bangladesh played two Tests, three ODIs and two T20Is.
Despite no clear indication of the pacer's availability for this season, SRH coach Tom Moody remained hopeful. “Mustafizur is more than likely to join the squad in Mumbai,” Moody told the media on the eve of their home game against Gujarat Lions on April 8.
Now that the news has been confirmed by the man himself, SRH fans can rejoice as Mustafizur adds a lot more stability to the already good-looking bowling line-up with his excellent variations.
However, with Bangladesh and New Zealand playing a tri-series in Ireland beginning May 12, there is still an air of uncertainty over the pacer's stay for the entire duration of the tournament. SRH's last two leagues games are on May 8 and 13 respectively, while the play-offs begin on May 16. The final of the tenth edition of the IPL is scheduled for May 21.
Bangladesh team however will have practice session in Sussex where Mustafizur and Shakib won’t join. Both of them will join the team in Dublin before May 12.
“I have talked to the board in this regard. I’ll go straight to Dublin from India,” Mustafizur said.
