20 schools receive books in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: A total of 20 secondary schools here yesterday received 3,100 Bangla and English language books worth around Taka 44 lakh free of cost at conference hall of BGB Rest House in the city, reports BSS.
The Asia Foundation- Bangladesh donated and distributed the books in association with Pubali Bank Limited in order to promote the importance of books and reading habit among students and school teachers.
Through its Books for Asia programme, The Asia Foundation donates thousands of new books annually to academic institutions, libraries, and nonprofit organisation and government offices across the country.
Additional commissioner (general) of Rajshahi Division Aminul Islam and deputy country representative in Bangladesh of The Asia Foundation Sara Taylor attended and addressed the distribution ceremony as chief and special guest respectively. Ferdous Chowdhury, deputy general manager of Pubali Bank Ltd Md. Kamruzzama, local unit president of Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry Prof Rosettee Najneen and program manager of The Asia Foundation Sukla Dey also spoke. A large number of students and teachers from various schools in the city were present on the occasion.
In their speeches, the guests focused on promoting reading habit among students and teachers and emphasized the importance of girls education and reaching books to underprivileged and rural community schools.
