Mohamed Athif, the father of deceased Maldivian model and medical student Raudha Athif, completely rejected his son Rayyan Athif’s statement, published in the international media, claiming that Raudha was murdered by extremists for not wearing Islamic clothing.
In a statement to The Independent on Sunday morning at the lobby of Parjatan Motel in Rajshahi, Mohamed Athif said his son, who has just finished his A-levels, made this comment out of a sense of unease and may have misjudged what is right and wrong regarding the case.
“I think this is a very serious allegation regarding the case. It is not our duty to say who did it. It is the duty of the investigation department to find out the truth behind this murder,” he added.
When asked why the family is treating this incident as a murder, Mohamed Athif said that being a physician, he could observe some signs of strangulation on his daughter’s body. The forensic doctors who conducted the autopsy, however, dismissed his claims, saying that they were “birthmarks”.
Meanwhile, all procedures for filing a murder case have been completed. The murder case could be filed any time at Rajshahi court, it has been learnt. “We are making preparations for filing the case with the court. We will include the names of two of Raudha’s classmates including a girl at Islami Bank Medical College,” Mohamed Athif added.
When asked whom he suspected, Mohamed Athif claimed one of the duo had given Raudha a glass of juice laced with some tablets. Apparently, there had been a misunderstanding between the two girls and heated words had been exchanged over phone and SMS, which Raudha’s mother had witnessed.
“The girl (classmate) may have some real information about the incident, which is why we requested the investigating officer to take her phone,” he added.
Mohamed Athif also claimed that the girl and the other classmate, a male, have access to Raudha’s social media account password. He said just after Raudha’s death, her followers started disappearing from social media. The first two people whose names were deleted were these two classmates.
Mohamed Athif added that Raudha had messaged the girl, saying: “I’ve lost trust in you. Never come to my room again. I don’t want to see your face.” Such harsh messages had been exchanged between them. After the death of Raudha, those conversations were found to have been deleted, which means they had got the password before Raudha’s death, according to Mohamed Athif.
Raudha Athif, a second-year student of
Islami Bank Medical College and a VOGUE model, was found dead in her room at the women's dormitory of the college in Rajshahi on March 29.
