Locals demonstrate against avoidable losses
Netrakona: Netrakona Unnayan Nagorik Andolon staged a demonstration in the district town on Saturday to have several demands met, including immediate declaration of the haor regions of Netrakona as poverty-stricken areas, reports UNB.
The demands include the compensation and rehabilitation of the affected farmers whose boro paddy were inundated after damage to flood-control dams, and the punishment of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials and its contractors for constructing weak dam.
Witnesses said Unnayan Nagorik Andolon leaders and activists along with different political parties’ activists and people from different professions formed a human chain in front of Netrakona municipality office around 11am.
They also demanded introducing a rationing system for the farmers, providing agricultural inputs without fees, debt waiver on bank and NGO loans and soft loans in agriculture.
Netrakona Unnayan Nagorik Andolon president Sadir Uddin Ahmed, its in-effect president Aminul Islam Bhuiyan and chief adviser Lt. Col. (retd) Abdur Nur Khan, among others, spoke at the programme.
12 fishermen held in Bhola
BHOLA: At least 12 fishermen were arrested here this noon for catching Hilsha fishes defying a government ban, reports BSS.
A joint team of Coast Guard and RAB conducted a drive in Khal area of the Meghna river and arrested the fishermen with 20,000 miters of current net, said Asaduzzaman, senior fisheries officer of Sadar upazila.
Later, the fishermen were produced before a mobile court, he said.
Recently the government has imposed a ban on catching Hilsha fish from November 2016 to June 2017 for smooth breeding.
Seed, fertilizer distributed among farmers in Bhola
BHOLA: Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) today started distribution of seed, fertilizer and cash money among over 7,000 small and marginal farmers in the district for cultivating Aush paddy on their land, reports BSS.
Sadar Upazila Parishad (UP) chairman M Mosaraf Hossain distributed the seed, fertilizer and money among 2,300 farmers as the chief guest at a simple function held at the UP hall room.
Each farmer received five-kg high yielding variety seed of Aush paddy, 40-kg chemical fertilizer and cash Taka 400.
During this week, farmers of the other upazilas of the district will get the seed, fertilizer and money for cultivating the crop, the DAE official said.
