The government as part of its continuous efforts to further improve the city traffic movement will sign three deals separately for constructing the much awaited Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 at the end of this month.
“We are expecting to sign three separate deals on metro rail tracks, stations and depot of the MRT Line-6 at the end of April while the negotiation on the contract of rolling stock has been done by nearly 95 percent," Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) M Mofazzel Hossain told BSS in the capital on Saturday.
Also the Project Director of the MRT Line-6, Mofazzel Hossain said the cost of the three packages is estimated at around Taka 5,000 crore to Taka 6,000 crore, now at the law ministry for vetting.
The Project Director said the DMTCL would sign three separate contract packages (CPs) including CP-2, CP-3 and CP-4, adding, "We have issued notification of award after the Japan International Cooperation Agency's (JICA) concurrence and the approval of the DMTCL board."
Besides, necessary file works of the CP-8 for rolling stock would be completed in this month, he said.
According to the project details, the government has included metro rail in the fast-track mega projects, while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has earlier taken up development and welfare oriented programmes for the advancement and progress of the country.
It said the package CP-02 is for the Civil and Building works of the Depot, CP-03 is for the construction of metro rail tracks (viaduct) and elevated stations from Uttara North to Pallabi and the CP-04 is for the construction of metro rail tracks and elevated stations from Pallabi to Agargaon.
The MRT Line-6 is an elevated metro rail system to be implemented in Dhaka. Once implemented, the MRT Line-6 will run from Uttara to Motijheel with halts at 16 stations.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the construction work of the country's first-ever metro rail project on June 24, 2016. The MRT-6 would be constructed at a cost of about Taka 22,000 crore. Of the amount, the JICA is providing Taka 16,500 crore, while the rest of the fund would come from the Government of Bangladesh (GoB), official sources said.
The fast moving metro rail will run to and from Uttara and Motijheel via Mirpur and Farmgate, carrying 60,000 passengers in an hour and touching every station in every four minutes. The 20.1-kilometer MRT Line-6 will run from Uttara Third Phase and pass through Pallabi, the west side of Rokeya Sarani and Farmgate, Hotel Sonargaon, Ruposhi Bangla, TSC of Dhaka University, Doel Chattar, Topkhana Road and Bangladesh Bank.
There will be 16 stations - Uttara North, Central and South, Pallabi, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-10, Kazipara, Taltala, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Sonargaon, National Museum, Doyel Chattar, Bangabandhu National Stadium and Bangladesh Bank.
Once MRT Line-6 Project is in operation, the commuters would enjoy easy-going traffic and there would be no perennial congestion of transportations in this gradually expanding city.
