Seven industrial units in the newly established two private economic zones in Narayanganj have started production initially that is expected to expedite the industrial growth and job creation in the country, reports BSS.
"Two of the three certified economic zones in private sector--Meghna and Aman--have started operation. Cement, packaging and shipbuilding industrial units have started production in a limited scale," said Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) Paban Chowdhury.
Talking to the news agency, he said another private zone--Abdul Momen--has already stated allocation of plot to investors for setting up industries.
He said the seven industrial units having an estimated total investment of US$1.0 billion will be able to go for large scale production in the next year.
BEZA has been working to establish 100 economic zones in 2030 across the country and as part of this move, 15 organisations in private sector have already been given pre-qualification certificate. Of the 15 organisations three have been given final clearance for beginning operations, said Chowdhury.
Work on Mongla economic zone is progressing fast under Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative, he said, adding that land development, construction of connecting roads, water and power connections and construction of boundary wall have already been completed. The authorities of this zone have already stated allocation of industrial plots to entrepreneurs, he said.  He said two more organisations in private sector will be given final clearance this year for development of economic zones. Besides, some more private organizations will be awarded pre-qualification certificate this year, he added. As part of the government's initiative to establish 100 economic zones, 76 sites have been selected initially and site for remaining 24 zones will be selected in phases, he said, adding that communication and availability of energy-power are getting priority in selecting any site for establishing the zone.
"We are hopeful about completing the development of at least 30 economic zones fully by 2019," he said.
