Dealing with depression

As depression is a disease of the mind triggered often by emotional problem, a patient’s emotional life should come first in the permanent recovery from depression

Prolonged depression can often turn into a serious health problem. In Bangladesh at present 4.6 per cent of the population is suffering from this mental disorder. This means a total of 73.60 lakh people here are suffering from depression but the government’s plan to contain the disease is little. Privately also, the prevalence of the disease is not well addressed. This is due to the fact that people in general often do not see depression as a mental disorder that deserves medical attention.
And according to a report of this newspaper 16.1 percent of the adult population is suffering from various kinds of mental disorder. Yesterday was observed as the World   Health Day and the focus of the day was depression and since depression is often neglected as a disease, the theme of the day this year is an apt one, ‘Depression: let’s talk’.
At present, nearly 30 crore people across the world are suffering from depression. This means one in 25 people is living with depression in the world. And the number of people suffering from the disease is increasing. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, the number depressed people have increased more than 18 percent from 2005 to 2015.
As depression is a disease of the mind triggered often by emotional problem, a patient’s emotional life should come first in the permanent recovery from depression. Many factors including prolonged diseases, unemployment, economic losses and deteriorating family relations and drug addiction can cause depression in an individual.
The symptoms of this disease range from mild to severe. At its mildest, a patient may simply feel persistently low in spirit, while severe depression can make a person feel suicidal, that life is no longer worth living. As youths are more prone to persistent low mood because at this stage life is often defined in terms of success and failure in our modern and materialistic existence, family members specially parents should be very careful of the young members of their families. They need to provide the fullest support to their depressed youths to overcome this mental disorder.
As depression can lead to serious mental disorder such as schizophrenia or affect a person’s vital bodily organs if left untreated, depression ought to be treated with care as early as possible.
