AFP, MADRID: Sevilla president Jose Castro on Thursday insisted he still had full confidence in coach Jorge Sampaoli, despite a dramatic slump in form in recent weeks.
Sampaoli's side lost 3-0 away to Barcelona on Wednesday, extending their run without a win in La Liga to five matches. They were also eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16 by Leicester City last month. “Our confidence in the coach is intact, but now is not the time to think about the club. We need to be focused on the eight finals we have left, there will be time later on to look at things,” said Castro, looking ahead to the end of the campaign.
Sampaoli has been linked to the soon to be vacant Barcelona post and has also been touted as the next coach of his native Argentina with pressure growing on their current boss Edgardo Bauza.
However, his star has waned slightly following Sevilla's elimination from Europe and their league run, which has seen them slip to fourth in La Liga, behind Atletico Madrid, their title dreams in shatters.
The club have also been hit by the departure of their long-serving sporting director Monchi, credited as the mastermind behind the most successful period in Sevilla's history.
“Sampaoli has one year left on his contract and it is logical that he should be worried about how we are going to go about signing new players. But for now that is not in the forefront of our minds,” said Castro. “We are not Madrid or Barcelona. But we are going to give Sampaoli every chance of winning the title.”
