A gridlock has been created on Dhaka-Tangail highway since Friday when hundreds of busses and other vehicles stranded with passengers returning home after the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. The traffic congestion has stretched from Elenga to Chandra. Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Gorai highway police, said the gridlock has been caused by excess pressure of vehicles on the highway. Large numbers
of passengers were returning to Dhaka after Eid vacation, he said.
Local people said the gridlock continued the whole night and eased a little in the morning. But it became acute yesterday morning from Elenga to Chandra on 60 kms of the highway. The returning passengers have been suffering a lot. The OC said law enforcers have been trying to ease the congestion. The congestion might be over by tonight,
he said.
Abdul Mannan, a driver of a car, said he started from Madhupur at 7am and reached Dhaka at 5pm. The four hours journey took 10 hours, he lamented.
Idris Ali, driver of Sonartari Paribahan coming from North Bengal, said they experienced huge congestion on the highway as engines of many transports broke down on the way.
Quick removal of those immobile transports from the highway can ease congestion, he said.
