Rain ruins seedbeds of Aman transplantation

Bagerhat: As the time for Aman transplantation gets closer, more than half the seedbeds have gone under water due to incessant rainfall in the district over the last few days, reports UNB. According to officials at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), about 1,620 hectares of the 2,810 hectares Aman seedbeds that was prepared by farmers ahead of the upcoming Aman transplantation have been submerged.
Of the inundated seedbeds, 111 hectares have completely been damaged and the rest can be damaged if the water prevails for the next couple of days.
DAE acting deputy director Monojit Kumar Mallik said they have visited some of the affected areas, and advised the farmers to make fresh seedbeds on relatively higher lands. He, however, noted that the farmers have adequate seeds and also enough time is left for preparing the seedbeds before the Aman transplantation.
“Hope, the farmers will be able to recoup the damages done and the target of transplanting Aman on 60,000 hectares of lands in the district could be achieved, provided the comparatively higher lands do not get inundated due to rain in the coming days,” he added.
Several affected farmers in sadar upazila complained that besides the heavy and incessant rainfall, unplanned and illegal embankments on the mouths of canals and floodplains have intensified water stagnation in the region.
Taiabur Rahman, a farmer of Polghat village, said the main reason behind the inundation is that the rainwater finds no way to recede as the embankments built by local influential people on the canals and beels for fish farming have obstructed the way.
Lutfur Rahman, another farmer of the village, demanded the authorities take immediate steps to cut the embankments in the area to save the Aman farmers.
