Amla thinks SA had in advantageous position

Sports Reporter, CTG

South Africa captain Hashim Amla claimed that his side had bit advantage with them in the first Test against Bangladesh which was washed out due to consistent rainfall.
“Going into the fourth day I think we probably had a slight advantage certainly with Bangladesh having to bat on the last day. It would have been a really good Test match, had we even scored 250, it would have been a challenge for Bangladesh to go for it on the last day,” he told the reporters yesterday.
He however didn’t term it as a missed opportunity like his opposite number Mushfiqur Rahim but said they got lot of positive from the match.
“When you don’t have control over the weather you can’t really call it an opportunity. There were a few things we will take from this Test match. We took advantage of the first two sessions of the game, where we batted well and then we lost it in the last session but things happen in Test cricket and the way we crawled our way back. Bangladesh to their credit batted decently in the first two sessions, but the way we held the game almost kept us in the running for winning the game at 61 for no wicket, I think we probably had a bit of advantage with us.”
He had special praise for his opening batsman Stiaan Van Zyl who with just a few match experience under his belt, showed the composure in the second innings to help the side get back on track.
“I think the openers batted really well. Stiaan has opened the batting for us before, he looked very comfortable. He looked like a seasoned campaigner. We know what a quality player he is. He has batted with a lot of intent. For their confidence and for the team they put up a decent performance,” he said adding that it helped them take the confidence into the second Test.
“Although there were little contributions and nobody really put up a big score but still the guys can take the confidence into the next Test.”
Amla’s strategy of not using the JP Duminy’s spin on the second day when Bangladesh were batting well, was criticised to which he replied, “I didn’t feel the need to bowl him. We had Simon Harmer bowling off spin and Stiaan filled up the overs. He bowled very well to keep the game in check for a long time. So I didn’t feel the need to use JP.”
“On the bowling front I think our seamers did exceptionally well. I think the best time to bat was when Bangladesh were batting and to their credit they did pretty well. But our seamers tried hard. And Simon Harmer took a three for and he is turning out to be a really good bowler for us.”
The success of Simon Harmer in Bangladesh definitely came as good for South Africa who will tour India after three months.
“It’s a bit early to tell. The Indian tour is three months away. But the game that he has played… it’s a very good showing he has got good control and has a lovely energy and has fit into the team well. He is doing a good job.”
