Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) vice president Mahbubul Anam defended Mashrafe’s decision to retire from T20, stating that it will not be very easier task for Bangladesh team to fill the void of Mashrafe’s place.
Bangladesh limited-overs captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza on Tuesday announced his retirement from Twenty20 just before the outset of the first match of the T20 series against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Cricket Club Ground.
“I want to take Mashrafe’s own decision with respect. He has taken his decision for retirement that will be his own decision. Actually he has taken a matured decision considering the future of the Bangladesh cricket,” said Mahbubul Anam.
“The next World T20 will be held after three years. He left the team to give chance for young players. I don’t see any instance of player, who leaves the national team with this view. Hats off to him,” Anam told media.
“It would be better if we got such an ambassador and cricket like him for the interest of our cricket. We had nothing much to get from him. But we got more than our expectation from him,” he added.
Citing Mashrafe as a pillar of Bangladesh Cricket, BCB vice president said that his contribution behind the meteoric surge of Bangladesh cricket is much enough.
“Mashrafe is a pillar for Bangladesh cricket. He has a lot of contribution behind the current position that Bangladesh are possessed. There is none equivalent to him in case of unite the team,” he said.
“I always told that Mashrafe is a big-hearted cricketer. I didn’t see anyone like him in Bangladesh cricket till now. It will not be easier task for Bangladesh team to fill up the gap of his place. Player like him comes out once in a decade,” he also said. This BCB director said that he does not see any player who leaves the national team with the view that Mashrafe described behind his retirement.
“The way he wants to inform the people that were his own decision. I don’t make any comment on his decision. But the way he led the team yesterday against Sri Lanka in the first T20 you will not get any loophole there. With his physical condition what he does one after another, I think, no sportsman in the world could do it,” Mahbubul Anam said.
Anam, who also chairman of High Performance (HP) programme patronized by BCB, urged newsmen not to float on speculation and said that Mashrafe will always be in their discussion for the development of Bangladesh cricket.
“I don’t pay heed to rumour. You also don’t do it. It ups to you how you will receive the matter. We don’t want to pay heed to any rumour. I think the decision Mashrafe takes that was a well-thought decision. The way he encourages the junior cricketers that is unbelievable. There was no such environ in our dressing room in past,” the BCB vice-president said.
“Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will discuss captain’s decision in their next board meeting. There is no T20 cricket of late. Actually we have no T20 game before the full series against Pakistan in July-August. We have enough time in our hand. I will of course discuss with Mashrafe in this respect. As he leads the team from the front we will see his decision with importance,” he also added.
“He is still Bangladesh one day captain. We led by him will go to play Champions Trophy. Before that, we will play a tri-nation series in Ireland. I think we will be mindful more on that direction,” he added.
Admitting their shortcoming, the director said that they could not develop in Twenty20 like other formats of games.
“Only one change has been made in T20 squad than ODI squad. Actually we could not reach at level to field different teams in different formats. We are still somewhat far from it. Actually we have not enough players in stock to form different teams for different formats,” he thinks.
“We had not chance to play good number of games in past. For this we could not produce enough players. But this environ has been changed a lot. We could play a good number of matches in three formats in the next one year.”
“But it will not be possible to form different teams for different formats. Three to four players might be changed,” he signed off.
