A 90-minute thundershower left many parts of Dhaka waterlogged yesterday afternoon.
It began with a drizzle around 3.30 pm and stopped after 5pm, leaving the city in a mess. The wind blew in gusts, at a speed of 40 km per hour, and was accompanied by frequent streaks of lightning and claps of thunder.
Rush-hour traffic became even worse, making life difficult for students and commuters. Many failed to get any form of transport and walked several kilometres amid rain and storm.
Rickshaw-pullers charged extra, as roads remained clogged with vehicles. The city centre at Paltan, Dainik Bangla to Motijheel, and Fakirerpool saw the worst traffic congestions. Witnesses reported rows of vehicles clogging the entire length of Maulana Bhashani Road from Matsya Bhavan to Farm Gate and to Mahakhali or even to Moghbazar flyover. Many people had to trudge it out on water-logged streets. From the Sonargaon SAARC fountain roundabout to FDC crossing to Hatirjheel and Karwanbazar, the roads were flooded.
The situation was perhaps the worst at Mouchak Road, which went under pools of rainwater. The damaged drainage due to the under-construction flyover made matters worse. Traffic moved at a snail’s pace, thanks to the ditches. There was no report of any casualties or damage to homes. But the waterways on the Shariatpur-Chandpur, Shimulia-Kathalbari, and Shimulia-Majhirghat routes had to be stalled.
Met office sources said the situation may improve from today. Rain was also reported from different regions of Chittagong, Comilla, Noakhali, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Rangpur divisions.
Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist, explained that a westerly low pressure stretching up to the North Bay, along with moisture-laden southerly winds, had caused the sudden showers.
The sea was rough the ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra sounded a signal-three caution.
