Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s decision to retire from the T20 International came all of a sudden but it wasn’t entirely surprising one. The captain himself more often shared the views in his private life that he didn’t like the format much personally even though he had some plans to make Bangladesh force to reckon with in this version. However his retirement decision sparked emotional reactions amongst the players and his fans. Such was the magnitude of his retirement that the social media outlet was erupted with huge messages in most of which people from every walk of life requested him to reconsider his decision.
The players, for whom he was like a guardian though didn’t request him to reconsider the decision, took their social media platform to show their gratitude towards Mashrafe. They revealed how Mashrafe helped them make a successful career and termed him the living legend.
“He might not have any world record under his belt or have not taken 400 or 500 wickets like cricket legends from other countries but there is no doubt that he has left his mark on Bangladesh cricket — his way,” Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal said in his verified facebook page.
“The change that we now see and boast about in Bangladesh cricket has come riding on his leadership and for me that is as good as making a world record or taking 400 wickets. He has set an example of how to run the dressing room as a family and get results at the same time. A person to look up to, MASHRAFE is a living legend for me!” Tamim, considered as the all time best batsman of Bangladesh added.
At the end, Tamim expected Mashrafe will end his T20 career with holding his head high when Bangladesh would take on Sri Lanka in the second and final T20 match today.
“I hope you end your Twenty20 international career with head high when we take on Sri Lanka in the last game of the series. Wish you all the best for your coming days. You will be missed CAPTAIN!”
Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim who Mashrafe replaced as the ODI and T20 captain when BCB introduced split captaincy in 2014 described in his reaction how the prodigious captain will be sorely missed.
“All great things come an end... and this is probably one of them. It’s hard for each of us to think of Bangladesh team without you Mash, you are a true champion. Just like me, I am sure every one is proud to play under a leader like you. It really has been an honor. Just want to thank you for cheering us up every time we were down and being such an inspiration for all of us. As much as we are upset, you will be missed in the T20I jersey. #ThankYouMash.”
It is reported Mashrafe fought hard with the BCB high ups and the team management to include Mahmudullah Riyad into the ODI team after he was dropped from the Test squad. Many still believed fight with BCB regarding Riyad issue led his retirement from the T20 International and may also lead his ODI retirement after the Champions Trophy in June. Mashrafe however was keen to play till the 2019 World Cup.
Mahmudullah Riyad congratulated Mashrafe for his wonderful achievement.
“Mashrafe bhai, first I would like to congratulate you for your wonderful achievements in T20 internationals. We really gonna miss you specially me. You are my brother, my friend whom I can share everything. You are a fighter, a great leader & captain & a true champion. Feeling really sad but that’s how our life goes!you have showed us how to build a team like a family. I have learnt so many things from you. No doubt you are a terrific player & most importantly a very good human being. Mash we all love you. RESPECT # LEGEND.”
When Bangladesh heavily relied on spinners and neglected the pacers, Mashrafe discovered that his young pace troop could be more effective should they get the proper chance. Bangladesh’s spinners became predictable as the time progressed. Mashrafe’s plan to introduce three-man pace attack at the home ground laid a blueprint of the success and reduced a huge load on Shakib Al Hasan. This blueprint eventually helped Bangladesh win three straight series victory over India, Pakistan and South Africa at home in 2015.
The present pace troop, boasting with the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed actually was nursed by him.
Taskin Ahmed paid a tribute to the ‘Great Mashrafe’ recognising how Mashrafe instilled confidence amongst the pacers.
“He is our guardian. He protected us from all adversities, guided us in the ground when we are in trouble. He is a great leader.”
While the players checked their emotions while reacting on his retirement, the fans literally went mad.
“You are successful captain for Bangladesh cricket board and brought many victories for Bangladesh cricket lovers and you are inspiration for next generation , we proud to have you as a captain and player as well, even I don’t think so there would be a same captain as what you have done in your international career and respected your announcement of retirement and will miss you. Loved you legend from bottom of my heart,” a fan named Mosharraf Hossain Reyad wrote in Mashrafe verified facebook page.
